Southern Teaching Services

Casual Relief Teaching Agency

Owned and run by Russell (25 years school administration experience) and Janet Mansfield (25 years experience in office administration and personnel agencies), Southern Teaching Services has been in business since 1994 and has grown to manage over 50 schools in the southern suburbs. Each year we find regular work for over 300 casual relief teachers and about 30% of them end up permanently employed in our schools. Once they have been with us for 6 months most casual relief teachers find they are getting all the work they want. Be aware that February and March are very quiet months. Newcomers may find it difficult to get regular work until term 2.

While you are welcome to freelance outside our system, we should warn you that we will give preference to those most regularly available to our company. We encourage our schools to tell us which casual relief teacher they want but at the same time we try to share the work around. We will introduce you to at least 3 or 4 local schools within the first 10 weeks and if this is not enough we will try 3 or 4 more. If you're still not getting repeat work you'll just have to be patient. Schools expect you to be neat and punctual and to represent yourself in a truly professional manner. Read the schools' suggestions on "What Every Emergency Teacher Should Know". Retain any documents you receive from us. Re-read them from time to time. You are entering a highly competitive industry.

We will do everything in our power to help you to advance your career or just find occasional work - the choice is yours. We look forward to meeting you and working with you in the very near future. The initial documentation is the minimum required under government regulations and is not time-consuming if you follow our instructions carefully. Do not attempt to complete the documentation without first phoning us to discuss the requirements. Be wary of any schools or agencies offering work without these documents as it may affect your entitlement to protection under Workcare as well as your indemnity the government may afford casual relief teachers against personal litigation.
